Tourist Visa is required to enter China for U.S. Citizens

If the purpose of Your visit in China is travel, sightseeing, tour, holidays, vacation, visiting family members etc. therefore You would need to apply for a Chinese Tourist Visa which is issued specifically on such purpose. It is called the “L” Visa.

Business Visa is required to enter China for U.S. Citizens

If the purpose of Your visit in China is business, including all business-related activities or scientific-technological and culture exchanges, short-term advanced studies or an internship - You would need to apply for a Chinese Business Visa which is issued specifically on such purpose. It is called the “F” Visa.

Visa to Hong Kong is not required for U.S. Citizens

Hong Kong is considered a separate principality. It is not a part of mainland China and American citizens can enter Hong Kong without applying for Chinese visa.
